Ano Lechonia or Ano Lehonia (Greek: Άνω Λεχώνια) is a Greek tpwn located 11 km east of Volos in the Pelion area in the Magnesia prefecture. Xinovrysi is connected with a road linking with Trikeri and the GR-34. Ano Lechonia is the seat of the municipality of Artemida. Its population in 2001 was 1,221. Geography The mountains dominate the northeast, the Pagasetic Gulf covers the southern part and farmlands are within the village and it produces fruits, olives and vegetables. Ancient times The name Lechonia along with nearby Kato Lechonia comes from the Slavic words leh meaning fields and from one Lechona, hegemony of the area. It said it was the ancient Methone. At the hill named Nevestiki (Νεβεστίκι) saved the artifacts from the ancient wall. Byzantine Era During the Byzantine Era, the sources said as the Frankish Empire. That time, Michael VII Palaeologus married someong who was with the Achaean Villehardoun. Ottoman period When the Ottomans invaded Greece, it was to be inhabited by the Turks and built homes. The Greek War of Independence of 1821 did not saw victory in the village, the village was not Greek for the next 60 years. Greek Ano Lechonia and modern times The village joined Greece in 1881 when the Greeks liberated Thessaly and the Turkish population fled the area. The village became Hellenized and Christianized once again. The village saw a factory opened in 1875, it became linked with rail in 1996, another factory was built in Koutoupi (Κουτούπη) in 1900, rich people moved and built companes (Archontika Kontou, Kassiopoulo, Chatzikyriaki or Hatzikiriaki) The union (SPOLK) who made poles which entered the international marked. The ice factory opened in 1920 and first produced and received electricity to the town. After World War II and the Greek Civil War, things changed a lot, it opened a school in 1956, paved roads, a health center added, a kindergarten school, today, the town is the easternmost suburb of Volos. Other Ano Lechonia has a school, church, a lyceum (middle school), a gymnasium (high school), banks and a few squares (plateia). Links
