Drepano

Drepano, (Greek: Δρέπανο), older form: -n, rare form: Dhrepano, accented forms: Drépano and Dhrépano is a village in the municipality of Rio, Achaia prefecture, Greece. As of 2001, it had a population of 388 for the village and sits at 1,000 m above sea level. The Volinaios River flows to north and the Panachaiko mountains are to the south.

Location and transportation

Drepano is located 15 km east from Patras, 2 km from the old GR-8/E65 (Athens - Corinth - Patras), and the GR-5 (E55) with the GR-48 (E65) interchange, east from the centre of Rio, and about 25 km west of Aigio. Its nearest interchange is in Rio.

Geography and history

Drepano was ruled until by the Ottomans until the Greek War of Independence of 1821. It adopted its current name in the 20th century.

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, its buildings were rebuilt and emigration occurred at a higher rate until 1981 through to 1991, it became one of the few villages in mountainous Achaia to regain is population. Dessino became connected with asphalt in the 2000s. Electricity, radio and automobiles were introduced in the mid-20th century, television in the late-20th century and computer and internet at the turn of the millennium. In 1997, the ex-community (now a village and a municipal district) joined to become the newly formed municipality of Rio.

Today, it is a village with a few inhabitants, it is populated during the summer months. The population depends on olive and cattle productions.
