Glossa, Skopelos

Glossa (Greek: Γλώσσα meaning tongue), older forms: Paliourio and Paliourion is a village located in the northwestern part of the island of Skopelos in the Sporades. The population in 2001 was 1,006 for the village and 1,195 for the municipal district. The town's elevation is 200 to 300 meters. Glossa is located about 10 km northwest of Skopelos "as the crow flies" and about 25 km coach or automobile with the island's only important road

Information

In 1960, Glossa opened a public school, a telephone centre and had 1,842 inhabitants, the last census in 2001 showed 1,006 and is may fall below the 1,000 mark again.


Glossa was linked with pavement in the mid-20th century and generated a growth on tourism, hydro and phone lines soon followed as well as more paved roads in the 1980s.

In the older administrative area of Choras, it was constituted as a different municipality as well as Klima.
