Koronos is a small village (population 693 in 1991) in the north of the island of Naxos, Greece. It is part of the Drymalia municipality. Koronos is build on the east side of the mountain Koronos, the second highest mountain of Naxos. It belongs to the so called Smyridochoria.named after the emery which is obtained at the emery mines in the region. The Greek island of Naxos used to be the main source of this industrially important rock type. It has been mined on the eastern side of Naxos for well over two thousand years until recent times. However, demand for emery has decreased with the development of sintered carbide and oxide materials as abrasives.
