Koufovouno (Greek: Κουφόβουνο) is a Greek settlement in the municipality of Didymoteicho in the northern Evros prefecture, Greece 6 km west of town as well as the GR-51/E81 (Alexandroupoli - Orestiada - Ormenio). Its 2001 population was 988. Its elevation is 70 m. Geography Koufovouno is located south of Orestiada, 6 km west of the Evros River and the Turkish border, NNE of Alexandroupoli and approximately 25 to 30 km east of the Bulgarian border. During the Ottoman period, other than the Turks, Koufovouno was inhabited mostly by Bulgarians, and lay near the line between areas of Bulgarian and Greek majority in Western Thrace. It was occupied by the Greeks during the end of World War I and shortly became a part of Greece. Its current population is mostly descendants of Greek refugees from Eastern Thrace. Economy, education and population Its economy is based mainly on agricultural products. There is an elementary school, a church and a big square. The nearest high school is in Didymoteicho.
