Namata (Greek: Νάματα) is a small village of the Platykampos Municipality of the Larissa Prefecture, Greece. Namata is located NNW of Volos and east of Larissa. Namata is connected with the road linking with Platykampos and the GR-6 (Larissa - Volos) The population was 142 (census 2001)
Geography Namata is situated in the Pineios Valley in which farmlands surround the area. History Namata was liberated by the Greeks in 1880. The origin of the name comes from the Ancient Greek word nama (νάμα) which means clean water. In the past it was located near the Lake Karla with its large fishes called karlisia or karlissia (καρλίσια) and zazania (ζαζάνια). The Lake Karla does nor exist since 1955 after it was dried up to use the area for agriculture. The area had an English military airport which was under control by the Germans in 1940. In 1943 British army forces cooperated with the Greek resistance groups. The village has two churches dedicated to Agios Georgios. The old church was build during the Ottoman period.
In the heart of the village there is a small square, filled with people during the summer time when many visit their old village. Around the village is a stone bridge Various archaeological artifacts were found in the region Other information The economy is based on agriculture ( products such as cotton , corn, wheat and other crops including tomatoes, potatoes and beans) and stock farming . There are two artificial lakes in the region used for irrigation but also for sailing and fishingThe farmlands today features two large fams, one which existed for many years and is second constructed. In the spring, the lakes are still filled with water, sailing is used over the lake. During the summertime where the water is at the low level (other than the entire year), fishing is common.
