Palaiochouni, Paleochouni, Palaiohouni or Paleohouni (Greek: Παλαιοχούνη), older forms: Paleochounio, Paleohounio, Palaiochounion, Paleochounion, Palaiohounion and Paleohounion is a Greek village located around 10 km east of Megalopoli, 5 km west from the nearest interchange with the GR-7/E65 (Kalamata - Megalopoli - Tripoli), and about 23 km west-southwest of Tripoli. Palaiochouni is connected with the GR-7. Palaiochouni had a population of 73 in 2001 for the village. Mallota is also in the municipality of Megalopoli. * Kerastaris, northeast Geography Palaiochouni is situated in a mountain slopes. The mountains cover the area and are made up of rocks with grasslands and bushes along with a couple of forests and ungevetated spots at higher elevations. The Alfeios river lies to the south . Farmlands are also within the village. Its panorama includes the mountains around the area, not as much mountains can be seen. Population
History The village used to have a large population before the beginning of the 20th century. After World War II and the Greek Civil War, the population began to decline as residents moved to larger towns and cities and outside of Greece including North America. The population between 1981 and 1991 declined by half but it recovered like some villages in the prefecture only by one inhabitant between the 1991 and the 2001 censues. Other Palaiochouni has a church, and a square (plateia), its nearest school and lyceum (middle school) and gymnasium (secondary school) are in Asea. Links
