Periphery: South Aegean
Rinia, or Rineia is a small island near the island Delos, part of the Cyclades . The island is 9 km SW of Mykonos and 140 km SE of Athens. The area of the island is c. 10 km2. The island was used in antiquity as a burial place for the citizens of the sacred island of Delos. Most of the Archaeological discoveries are shown in the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos Bereits in der Antike war die Insel bewohnt, stand aber immer im Schatten der damals weitaus bedeutenderen Nachbarinsel Delos. Auf der Insel wurden die Verstorbenen von Delos bestattet. Es gibt einige eher weniger bekannte Ausgrabungsstätten, die immerhin einige kunsthistorischen Funde zu Tage gebracht haben, welche überwiegend im archäologischen Museum von Mykonos ausgestellt werden.
