Moraitis School

Moraitis School is a coeducational independent school in Athens, Greece. It is located in Psychico, a suburb of the capital. Along with Athens College they are considered the "big two" private schools in Athens.

History

Moraitis was founded in 1936 by Karolos Berzan, a mathematician. It moved to its current location in 1952, when ownership was transferred to Antonis Moraitis - whose name the school has since 1976. The school was founded upon certain traditional values - known amongst students and staff as the "12 principles" (Dodekalogos) which are still enstilled today.

Today

Nowadays, Moraitis school is one of the most famous private schools in Greece, consistently doing well academically. Education can be in Greek - following the Greek educational system, and allowing students to sit for Greek university entrance exams - or in English - through the International Baccalaureate programme. Every year, students graduate from Moraitis to go to a variety of universities in Greece, the UK, the US and elsewhere.

It is one of the biggest educational institutions in the country, with more than 2,000 students and 240 teachers, amongst its primary school, middle school and high school.

Moraitis is also famous for a hosting an annual school fayre ("Panigiri"). Organised by its students every year, the School fayre hosts a variety of activities and events. The fayre is always very profitable, with all the revenue going to charity organisations.

Traditionally, the Moraitis school fayre is held the weekend after the school fayre of another private school, Athens College.

In fact, Athens College and Moraitis share a friendly rivalry, which is seen in various sporting events. Most notably, the annual Athens College - Moraitis School football match (with Athens College having dominated over the years).
