DEI ( Public Power Corporation)

The Public Power Corporation or DEI (ΔΕΗ, Δημόσιας Επιχείρησης Ηλεκτρισμού/Dimosia Epicheirisi Ilektrismou) is a Greek government-owned hydro and energy company which serves electricity and power for all of Greece.

History

In 2000 or 2001, a new power line was added between Kavasila and the island of Zante (Zakynthos) to increasse power consumption on that island.

Economy

DEI is one of the largest companies in Greece and has a huge number of employees and has a large part of the Greek economy.

Monopoly

RAE (Ρυθμιστική Αρχή Ενέργειας Rythmistiki Archi Energeias) began in the energy market. This made new decisions for DEI while the market became so important, that it created companies which tried and became one of the largest government-owned corporations.

Power plants

With the production of electric energy, DEI functions nuclear plants in Ptolemaida and Megalopoli, etc., and hydroelectric plants in Agras, Lake Marathon, Acheloos, etc. DEI also powers windmills which are mainly founded in the Aegean Islands.

Mining areas

Other than the monopoly in electric energy, DEI has mining areas within power plants. Nuclear plants produces electricity and power from lignite and other plants uses coal. The largest mining areas are located around Ptolemaida, around Amyntaio in the Florina prefecture and around Megalopoli.

Transformers

The Kalamtata - Pyrgos - Patras Line is a line runs near Pyrgos, west of Amaliada, east of Gastouni, 1.5 km west of Lechaina and encircles to the north, the southern part of the plain and connecting with another line connecting from Megalopoli. This power line has several power stations including Pyrgos, Amaliada, Lechaina, Varda and Lappa. The power line has several branches including a 5 km long line to near Lappa. The line linking Kavasila and Zante passes near Kavasila, about 1 km south of Dimitra, south of Kastro, north of Loutra Kyllinis and into the island of Zante. Most of the line is underwater.

Other lines includes Patras - Corinth - Athens, and Pyrgos - Megalopoli.
