Plateia Georgiou A (Georgiou A Square) is a central square of Patras, with the known municipal theater Apollon. It was build during the period of Ioannis Kapodistrias with a plan of Stamatis Voulgaris in 1829. The plan was for a new city next to the old after the destruction during the period of the war for independence. It was called initially Plateia Dimokratias (Democracy Square), changed to Kalamogdarti (after Periklis Kalamogdartis and his speech in 1843 about the first Greek constitution in this place), Othonos, Kentriki, Thomopoulou, Ethniki, Palligenesias and finally in 1863 it was named Georgiou A (after the new king George I) See also All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License
