Emporion / Empúries

Empúries (Catalan name; in Spanish: Ampurias) is a town in the Mediterranean coast of the Catalan comarca of Empordà. It was founded by the ancient Phocaean Greeks with the name of Ἐμπόριον ( Emporion — "market").

As a Roman city it was called Emporiae.

It was also the capital of the historical Catalan county of Empúries, whose territory was roughly the current comarques of Alt Empordà and Baix Empordà.
