Lepreum (Λέπρεον). A town of Elis in Triphylia, (today Elis Prefecture) situated forty stadia from the sea ( Herod.iv. 148). Its name was derived from Leprea, daughter of Pyrgeus, or from Lepreus, son of Poseidon, and rival of Heracles, by whom he was slain (Pausan. v. 5, 4). It was attacked by the Spartans during the Period of the Olympic truce and they had to pay 2000 Minae for this violation. But then his sons escaped privily to Lepreum, with a few servants; and Xenophon himself fled to Elis before the place fell; and from thence he went to Lepreum to his children, and from thence he escaped in safety to Corinth, and settled in that city. Diogenes Laertes
