Proconnesus island was in ancient times famous for its marble. Today it is called Marmara Island Sea of Marmara and part of Turkey. Marble was exported in the Meditteranean region , especially during the early Period of the Byzantine Empire. Even today Marble is the main product of the island. Some Greek villages still exist.
