Proconnesus

Proconnesus island was in ancient times famous for its marble. Today it is called Marmara Island Sea of Marmara and part of Turkey.

Marble was exported in the Meditteranean region , especially during the early Period of the Byzantine Empire. Even today Marble is the main product of the island.

Some Greek villages still exist.

Aristeas, a Greek legendary poet, was from Proconnesus as Herodot describes in his Histories.
