Troezen (TREE-zun) is a city in Argolis located southwest of Athens and a few miles south of Methana. In Greek mythology, Troezen was ruled by King Aegeus and was the birthplace of Theseus. When Theseus came of age his mother took him to a forest clearing outside the city walls and challenged him to lift a boulder. Beneath it he found the sword and sandals of his father, King Aegeus of Athens, who had left them there for his son to find if he should prove himself worthy. The temple of Isis was made by the Halicarnassians in Troezen, because this is their mother-city, but the image of Isis was dedicated by the people of Troezen.
