In Roman mythology, Achates (Αχάτης) [A-ka'-teze] was a close friend of Aeneas. He accompanied him throughout his adventures, and led him to the Sibyl of Cumae, remarkable for, and a perennial type of, fidelity.

Achates , called by Virgil "fidus Achates." The name has become a synonym for a bosom friend, a crony, but is generally used laughingly.—The Æneid.

He, like Achates, faithful to the tomb.

Byron, Don Juan, i. 159.

The Royal Navy (United Kingdom) named the HMS Achates, an A class destroyer sunk during World War II, after the mythical character Achates.

Virgil I, 188, 312; VI, 34, 158.
