National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece Artist/Maker unknown Huge votive red-figure kothon. The birth of Helen : she was born from an egg that was the fruit of the union between Nemesis and Zeus, brougth to Leda at Sparta by a shepherd of Hermes. The representation shows Helen coming out of the egg, which is on an altar. Leda jumps back, startled, while Zeus, in the form of an eagle, watches from on high. Helen's two brothers, the Dioskouroi Castor and Polydeukes, are present. Found in Analipsi (Vourvoura), Kynouria. Local workshop, last decade of the 5th c. BC.
