Michail Bletsas

Michail Bletsas was born in Chania, Crete on 1967. He is the Director of Computing at the MIT Media Lab since the December of 1995.

He has designed and deployed most of the Internet network infrastructure systems that run the Media Lab and has extensive experience in the design and deployment of large scale information and computer network systems. As a Research Scientist at the Media Lab, he has been involved in many of the lab’s research initiatives and has lectured internationally in the areas of communications, e-business and network security as well as the societal implications of technology. Currently, he is spending most of his time experimenting with wireless networks implemented using off-the-self, low-cost components as a means to provide broadband Internet access to underserved areas.

He started his professional career in the Information Technology sector in 1986 and has held a variety of research, engineering and technical positions since then. Before joining the Media Lab, he was a Systems Engineer at Aware Inc. were besides designing and writing high performance software libraries for Intel’s distributed memory parallel supercomputers, he was involved in the development of one of the first ADSL Internet access testbeds. He has served as an advisor to numerous startup companies and he is one of the founders of the greek software company Velti S.A. where he is currently a member of the board of directors.

He holds a Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and an MSc Degree in Computer Engineering from Boston University. He is a member of the IEEE and the Technical Chamber of Greece.
