Kykkos monastery

The Kykkos monastery, which lies 20 km west of Pedoulas, is the most famous monastery in Cyprus. The Kykkos monastery was built in 1100 and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The monastery is 1318 meters high on a mountain in the north west Troodos Mountains. There are no remains of the original monastery as it was burned down many times. The first President of Cyprus was very fond of the monastery as he visited many times and even asked to be buried 3 km west of the monastery. There is a monument built to him near the monastery.
