Eleftherotypia (Greek: Ελευθεροτυπία) is a daily newspaper published in Greece. It is one of the most widely circulated newspapers in the country. Apart from the daily paper, Eleftherotypia also publishes its Sunday edition Kyriakatiki Eleftherotypia (Greek: Κυριακάτικη Ελευθεροτυπία). Kyriakatiki Eleftherotypia hosts advocacy journalism articles from Le Monde Diplomatique. Breaking the trend of Greek press, Eleftherotypia, first published in 1975, was owned by its journalists. However, over time, in order to adapt to changing conditions, the ownership passed to the Tegopoulos brothers. Now published by Thanasis Tegopoulos, it still retains its traditional socialist alignment. Every Wednesday, the newspaper features the "9" comics magazine which has been very influential to the Greek comic scene recently. Eleftherotypia and terrorism In December 1975, CIA's Athens station chief Richard Welch was murdered by the Revolutionary Organization 17 November. A manifesto was sent by the organization to Eleftherotypia, which was published the following day. This trend continued for every such action 17 November undertook, up until the organization's capture in 2002. Other Greek left wing terrorist organizations, such as ELA, as well as smaller militant anarchist groups, also sent their communiques exclusively to Eleftherotypia. Up to this day, when a bomb is set in Athens, the terrorists usually communicate with the Eleftherotypia to anonymously claim responsibility for the hit on account of their organisation. Eleftherotypia staff, when faced with such situations, always immediately contact the police. There have been numerous instances when the police have succesfuly disarmed planted explosive mechanisms before they explode, thanks to timely reports by the newspaper (and of course thanks to well trained police staff). The newspaper became known for its policy of publishing the proclamations of such groups without criticism. Until 2001, they abstained from condemning terrorist attacks, including assasinations. Also, Eleftherotypia editors have been vocal in criticising counter terrorism laws throughout the world, Many perceive these as evidence that Eleftherotypia is supportive of terrorism. [1]
International affairs In accordance with the paper's leftist alignment, Eleftherotypia articles are usually characterized by support of the Anti-globalization movement and opposition to United States foreign policy. Its editor-in-chief has been criticized for stating on television a few hours after the 9/11 attacks, that the attacks constituted a justifiable reaction to "American crimes throughout the times".[citation needed] The newspaper has also hosted several editorials which refer to Al Qaeda attacks as "the oppresed people's struggle" against the "American empire", which they characterised "the real terrorists", "a beast", "a tyrant" and "gangsters".
