Tymfi

Tymfi or Timfi, also Tymphi is also a mountain range in the north part of the prefecture of Ioannina. Its peaks stand over 2,400 m. the highest peak of the range is Gamila (elevation: 2,497 metres). Other peaks are: Gamila II at 2,480 m, Tsouka Rossa at 2,466 m. The massif of Tymfi also includes the Vikos Gorge which is referred to be the deepest gorge in the world (in proportion to its width) in the 2005 Guinness Book Of Records (1,100 m wide, 900 m deep). Tymfi lies in the mountain range of Northern Pindus. The 40° parallel is a few metres to the north. The mountain owes its name to a municipality of the same name.

The GR-5 (Kozani - Siatista - Ioannina) is to the north and northwest. Its length is approximately 20 to 25 km from east to west and its width is approximately 15 km from north to south. The Aoos river flows to the north and another to the southwest.

Information

Forests dominate the low lying areas of the mountain and contains pine and spruce trees, the valley areas, grasslands, bushes and unvegetated portions dominate the higher elevations. The area around the mountain contains villages and forest roads as well as hiking trails. Two roads surround the mountains.


Panorama

Its panorama includes the mountains to the north especially by the Albanian border, Smolikas to the northeast, Lygkos to the east, Mitsikelas to the north and more to the west. It can also view of the valley to the west and can also see the city of Ioannina and Pamvotida lake to the southwest.
