Caunus

Caunus was an ancient Carian city.

Caunus was under the control of the Persians. After a revolt and the victory of the Greeks in the Greco-Persian war Caunus joined the Delian Leaue. After one century Persians gained again the control of the city until the conquest of Persia by Alexander the Great. Caunus was ruled by the Hellenistic Ptolemaic and Seleucid kings. In the period 190-167 BC it was under the rule of the Rhodians and then it was part of the Roman Empire.Kaunos gehörte zeitweilig zum Attischen Seebund und zum Festlandbesitz der nahegelegenen Insel Rhodos. Der Ort galt in der Antike als reich, aber auf Grund der Lage im sumpfigen Flussdelta, in dem sich Krankheiterreger leicht vermehren können, als ungesund. Er war bekannt durch seine weithin exportierten getrockneten Feigen.

Das Gebiet um Dalyan, Kaunos, die Felsengräber und das Köycegiz-Delta ist auf Grund seiner Lage zwischen den Ferienzentren Marmaris und Ölüdeniz heute eine vielbesuchte Touristenattraktion.
