Paragraphe (παραγραφή). An Attic law-term that may be approximately rendered “a plea”; an objection raised by the defendant to the admissibility of the plaintiff's actionnot quite a “demurrer,” which is an objection arising from the plaintiff's own statement of his case, but rather a “special plea” depending on facts set forth by the defendant himself. It was given in writing; and if it went further than a mere denial of the plaintiff's allegations, the issue raised by it was tried as a proceeding preliminary to the principal cause. It was, therefore, a means of delaying the case.
