This is a summary and short review of the book Number 31328 by Elias Venezis. The story of Elias Venezis, starts in Aidini. It moves in slow paces, through the first days of the Turkish return to Asia Minor. The plot drags its weary feet through the fields of central Turkey, just like the Greek slaves follow their captors. The way to ?amele taburu? is slowly but steadily painted in pale and crimson, in red bloodstained steps of bare wounded feet walking on hot summer sand. The life of the slaves, as seen through the eyes of one who did share these horrible days, the months, the years of captivity, hard work, hunger and cold, is slowly pulling down the spirit of the reader too. The few bright sparkles of humanity are lost forever as humans are treated as mere objects: striken to death by hammers, lethally wounded and left to die alone, raped and then killed. All hope and all light is lost, despite the occasional effort by the slaves to help their fellow-humans; sincere at first, half-hearted and erroded under a veil of utmost indifference at last. The ?book of slavery", as Elias Venezis himself has subtitled it, is a story of inhuman acts. A story of how inhuman humans can be at war. A story of all the terror and madness of men turning against men. Through this grim pit of hopeless despair and indifference rises an eternal hymn to the essense of humanity.
