Soti Triantafyllou

Soti (full name Sotiria) Triantafyllou (Greek: Σωτηρία (Σώτη) Τριανταφύλλου) (born December, 1957) is a Greek writer and journalist, part of the modern generation of Greek writers. She was born in Athens and she has spent a considerable part of her life abroad, mainly in the US and Paris. She studied pharmacy, French literature, and she holds a PhD in American History and Cinema (E.H.E.S.S., Paris). Since 1985, she has published numerous novels, short stories, essays on cinema as well as political articles. Two of her books have been translated in four languages (German, French, Catalan and Hebrew). Except being a writer, Soti Triantafyllou translates from four languages and also works as a freelance journalist.[1][2]

Life

Soti Triantafyllou studied pharmacy at the University of Athens. On completing her studies, she left Greece for Paris where she stayed from 1979 to 1982, when she moved to New York. While in the States she travelled extensively and she attended many rock concerts. For three and a half years she states that she worked as American History teacher in a public Bronx high school.[3] In France, she studied History and Culture at School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (E.H.E.S.S.) in Paris where she obtained her PhD (1984) with a thesis L'Image de la société américaine à travers la comédie hollywoodienne: 1946-60 (The Image of American society through the Hollywood comedy: 1946-60).[1] Years later, when she returned to Greece, she obtained a degree in French Literature at the University of Athens. Soti Triantafyllou today lives in Exarcheia (a neighbourhood in downtown Athens) and Paris.[1]

Career

Starting in 1985, she has published numerous novels, short stories, essays on cinema as well as political essays. Her book Underground sky (Greek: Ο υπόγειος ουρανός) has been translated in German, while her 2000 novel The pencil factory (Greek: Το εργοστάσιο των μολυβιών) has been translated in four languages (German, French, Catalan and Hebrew). Except being a writer, Soti Triantafyllou translates from four languages and also works as a freelance journalist,[1] writing articles for Greek papers (i.e. Athens Voice).
