Kavousi, Ierapetra

Kavousi or older form Kavousio (gr. Καβούσι / Καβούσιον ) is a village in Ierapertra municipality. . It is situated 19 kilometers north-east of Ierapetra, 26 of Agios Nikolaos and 42 kilometers of Sitia. It is built north west of Thripti mountain. In Kavousi many ancient minoan sites and hamlets have been found, among which Azorias. Kavousi lies just 2 kilometers from Tholos beach. The village has a magnificent view over Mirabello bay and the Ierapetra plain.
Two Early Iron Age settlements exist near Kavousi, one is called Kastro (Castle) at an altitude of 710 m. (35o 06' N,25 o 52 ' E) . Near Kavousi is an olive tree estimated to be 5000 years old.
