Varkiza (Greek: Βάρκιζα), also Alianthos (Αλίανθος) is a suburban place that is part of the municipality of Vari in southern Attica and is the located east of the Megalo Daktylo (Large Fingernail). Varkiza is approximately almost 2 km south of Vari, 22 km S of Athens, SW of the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport and the Attiki Odos (numbers 6 and 62), NW of Cape Sounio and south of the Hymettus Ring. Varkiza is linked with Poseidonos Avenue (GR-89). The nearest Proastiakos rail lies to the northeast. The Hymettus mountains lies to the northwest and the Mesogeian plain to the north. Another mountain lies to the northeast. Most of the street names are named after Greek myths as well as a main street named Poseidonos which is not a connection with the Poseidonos that runs from Neo Faliro down to near the Glyfada boundary. The forests covers a part of the municipality but much of the mountainous area are rocky and grassy. Varkiza has a famous beach that is linked with a hotel that includes a tennis court?, a park, a field, restaurant, tavern, complexes and more. The urban sprawl covers sporadically in the farmlands and west of Varkiza. The population were rural until the 1960s suburban housing popped up in the 1960s and the 1990s which most of the population are urban, it slowls continues to this day. The housing began in the central part of Varkiza. Farmlands used to dominate the central parts and within the Saronic. Later, Varkiza became part of the Athens Metropolitan Area. In the 1960s, the highway added two lanes. History In 1945, the Treaty of Varkiza which was signed on February 12, 1945 which ended the battles, nearly three months before World War II ended in its entirety. The treaty was divided into nine parts.
