AEL FC

AEL Limassol (Greek:ΑΕΛ;Αθλητική Ένωση Λεμεσού;Athletic Union of Limassol) is a cypriot multisport club based in Limassol. AEL have won a record 182 trophies in senior-level domestic competitions and are considered to be one of the leading sports clubs in Cyprus, with a large fan base of supporters.

AEL sports club maintains not only the football team (something very common in the country), but tries to give equal opportunities to all sports.

At present, AEL Limassol sports club maintains football, basketball, and volleyball teams that participate in their corresponding domestic leagues as well as in international competitions. AEL is the only team in Cyprus to have won a European title, winning the 2003 FIBA Regional Challenge Cup in front of 3000 ecstatic fans. They did it without losing a game (10-0), something that has not been done in European baskeball for 40 years.

History

AEL(Greek: Αθλητική Ένωση Λεμεσού;Athletic Union of Limassol) Founded in 1930: A kind of magic is born (04/10/1930).

AEL football 1931: AEL Limassol play their first match against EPA Larnaca which they win 6-1.

AEL football 1932: AEL Limassol appoint Greek coach Argiris Gavalas. He was the first 'foreign' figure in Cypriot football.

AEL football 1934: The Cyprus Football Association is formed. The founding members were AEL Limassol, Trust Nicosia, Olympiakos Nicosia, Aris Limassol, Apoel Nicosia, Turkish club, Anorthosis Famagusta, and Epa Larnakas.

AEL football 1938: AEL Limassol thrash Aris Limassol 24-1 and make it to the record books (20/11/1938).

AEL football 1939: AEL Limassol beat APOEL Nicosia 3-1 and win the Cyprus Cup for the first time.

AEL football 1941: The mighty Yellows are crowned League Champions for the first time.

AEL football 1956: Following a dispute, 29 footballers and the coach leave the 1955-56 Champions AEL Limassol and join Apollon Limassol - a 2nd division team.

AEL basketball 1966: The Cyprus Basketball Association is formed with AEL Limassol among its founding members.

AEL football 1968: AEL Limassol win the League Championship for the 5th time in their history and participate in the Greek First Division League.

AEL basketball 1974: AEL Limassol win their first basketball Championship.

AEL Volleyball 1976: The Cyprus Volleyball Association is formed. AEL Limassol participate in the first Championship and win the title. Since then AEL have dominated volleyball in Cyprus.

AEL basketball 1977: AEL Limassol become the first Cypriot basketball club to participate in a European competition.

AEL basketball 1983: AEL Limassol crash Ethnikos 177-39 and make it to the record books yet again.

AEL football 1987: The Yellows win the League Cup for the 5th time in their history by beating Apollon Limassol 1-0 thanks to a smashing goal from Pavlos Savva 'The Tank'.

AEL football 1989: AEL Limassol achieve their first international triumph by beating Austrian side Admira Wacker 1-0 at Tsirion Stadium.

AEL basketball 1994: AEL Limassol are relegated to the 2nd division for the first time in their history.

AEL football 1996: AEL Limassol are relegated to the 2nd division for the first time in their history.

AEL football 1997: AEL Limassol win the Second Division Championship. The First Title for the Football team in many, many years.

AEL basketball 2003: AEL Limassol win the FIBA Regional Challenge Cup in front of 3000 ecstatic fans.

AEL Basketball club founded: 1966

Home arena: Nikos Solomonides, Limassol

AEL is from the founding members of Cypriot Basketball Federation. With coach one of the schoolteachers of the sport in Cyprus, Michalaki Nikolaidi, the AEL began coward-coward with the beginning of official championships in 1967. It is established as the “queen” of Cyprus Basketball. Beyond the 12 championships, the 7 Cups and the 4 Super Cups that gained, AEL was also the first Cypriot team that took part at the Europe Cup. In 2003 the “queen” wore also her European crown after she accomplished she conquers at the newly established Regional Challenge Cup (South Conference) and became thus the first and unique team in all the sports that she brought in Cyprus a European trophy. There was a triumph that was completed with the astonishing record 10 victories in games equal in number.

27 March [[2006]] For the fourth consecutive year, EKA AEL Lemesos have won the Cyprus championship. EKA AEL has become the first team in the Cyprus league to win four titles in a row.
