Doukades

Doukades (Greek: ) is a village in the northwestern part of the island of Corfu. It is located in the municipality of Palaiokastritsa. Its 2001 population was 678 for the village and 689 for the municipal district and is ranked 2nd out of 4th in the municipal district's population, larger than its village. Neochori is located 20 km west of the city of Corfu. Several hills dominate the area.

History

The name of the settlement (nowadays the village) with I. Bounia (Ι. Μπουνιά) came from its first inhabitants in which brought the name Doukas (Δούκας, meaning duke in Greek). The older written origin it had Doukades in a notary writing from 1616. It brouthg the rocky archive of the Theotokis family, the Venetian press sagrado of Cuartano, the hamlet Korangio in which and the building of its public school in the entrance of the village. After World War II and the Greek Civil War, much of its buildings were rebuilt.

Doukades was characterized as a settlement with the law of October 19, 1978 No. 594 IV / November 13, 1998 (Codical statistics, number 22.1.137.01). The range which happened with the prefectural law with TP/6529 or July 25, 1986 based on the April 24, 1945 law (181 IV/May 3, 1985).

Other

Doukades has a school, a lyceum (middle school), a few churches, a post office, and a square (plateia). Its nearest gymnasium (secondary school) are in Skripero.
