Samos Prefecture

Fourni Korseon (Greek: Φούρνοι Κορσέων) more commonly Fourni, are a complex of small islands lie between Icaria, Samos and Patmos. The two largest islands of the complex, the main isle and the isle of Thymaina are inhabited. In the main isle the Fourni proper is the largest settlement and then Chryssomilia in the north is the second largest. The Fourni proper is the ferries landing site. The majority of the inhabitants are fishermen although during the summer season they are also occupated in tourist activities mostly room rentals and catering. On the main island a number of pristine beaches like Vlychada, Vitsilia, Petrokopio, Elidaki & Bali, exist. The isles are rather quiet, and the ambience is relaxed and ideal for family holidays.

Fourni

The island was used for providing building material for ancient Miletus. In the Byzantine Period often it was used by pirates from which it obtained its name Fourni Korseon. Fourni was also known as Fourneli.

Climate

The climate is arid and hot during summers. Winters are rather mild with average rainfall but constant strong archipelagic winds prevail.

Communication

Communication is oftenly interrupted during the winter period {mostly from November to April} due to bad weather, mainly strong winds. The rest of the year tactical communication with the islands of Icaria and Samos (by boat only) is available. There is no direct access to Athens by any means, though.
