Doxato, Drama

Doxato is a small city of the Municipality of Doxaton which was founded by law 2539/4-11-97 (ΦΕΚ Α 244/4-12-97 (Kapodistria Plan) and is located in Drama prefecture, it consists of 4 municipal districts.

The former municipalities of:

  1. Doxaton,
  2. Megalou Alexandrou

and the former communities of:

  1. Agios Athanassios,
  2. Kefalarion.

Municipality seat is Vathyspilo, village of the homonymous municipal district. The first authorities were elected in October 1998. The population was 11113 inhabitants (True Population 11000), according to the 2001 census.

The municipality is the third largest in the prefecture after the Drama and the Prosotsani municipalities.

The city Doxato is around 10 km SE from the city Drama.

The name Doxato was used since 1600. According to Stavros Mertzidis in the Byzantine period it was called Dokalon.

Memorial for the 650 persons of Doxato killed by Bulgarians, 30 June 1913. Another 350 were killed 29 September 1941 by the Bulgarian forces allies of the Germans and Italians during WWII.
