Vevi, rarely Veve (Greek Βεύη, Macedonian Баница - Banitsa) is a village of the Meliti municipality, Florina prefecture, located in Greek Macedonia (Northern Greece). Economy It is mainly a farming community and the site of a lignite mine. History The village was renamed Vevi in 1926 as a condition of the Treaty of Bucharest in 1913. From the 1940s onward, a majority of the inhabitants of Vevi left the village in search of work in the diaspora. Most of the villagers that emigrated from Vevi re-settled in the Toronto, Canada and Melbourne, Australia regions. To this day there are high concentrations of Macedonians from Vevi/Banitsa in these and surrounding areas. The Battle of Vevi took place on 09 April 1941 - 12 April 1941 between Australian and German troops.
