Sofades Municipality

Sofades (Greek: Σοφάδες) is a town in Thessaly, central Greece and it belongs to the prefecture of Karditsa (Καρδίτσα). Its population is 6045 (2001), many of them Roma. The terrain level is around 120 m above sea level, and the economy is mainly agricultural (cotton, corn).

Sofades is c. 17 km from Karditsa town.

The modern town is very close to the site of the ancient city of Kierion (Κιέριον), one of the most important cities of ancient Thessaly. The remains of an Athena temple are c. 4 km from Sofades. The name "Sofades" was first recorded as "Sofou" (Σοφού) at around 1454-5 AD. The non-Roma inhabitants of the region are known as Karagounides (Καραγκούνηδες) and they have always been speaking Greek.

Sofades was the first Greek town to be harmed by the Italian air forces during WWII as well as the first region (along with Karditsa) of Europe to be liberated from the nazi occupation in 1943
