Tinos is famous amongst Greeks for: the monastery of Panagia Evangelistria, its 20 windmills, the 1000 pigeon-houses, the 50 villages waiting to be explored, for the co-existence of Greek-Orthodox and Catholics, the Venetian fortifications, and for its famous sculptors and painters like Gyzis, Chalepas and Tsokles.

Because of it is located near the geographical center of the Cyclades island complex, and because of the Panagia Evangelistria monastery with its reputedly miraculous icon of Virgin Mary that it holds, assumed to be a work of Luke the Evangelist. The monastery was build 1823 , the architect was Efstratiou from Smyrna. Tinos is the center of a yearly pilgrimage that takes place at the date of the ascension of Virgin Mary (15 August, known in Greek as "Dekapentavgoustos" = 15th of August). This is perhaps the most notable and still active yearly pilgrimage in the region of the eastern Mediterranean.
