Agios Vlasios

Agios Vlasios is c. 15 km from Volos, its name is derived from the church of the village. Its older name was Karabas or Karabasi, "Black Head" in turkish when it was part of the Ottoman Empire until it was liberated as part of Thessaly in1881.

Only Turks lived in the settlement of Palaiokastro during the period of Turkish occupation. The ruins of a minaret which remained were unfortunately completely destroyed by some Greeks.
