Methoni (Greek Μεθώνη) is a town on the southwestern coast of the prefecture of Messinia, Greece. It is located 9km south of Pylos and 9km west of Foinikounda. It is also a municipality with the seat being this town. Nearby villages include Tapia, Kokkinia, Kritika, and the island of Sapientza.
Methoni was ruled by the Venetians in the period 1206 to 1500. In 9 August 1500 it was conquered by the Ottomans. With the support of the Knights Hospitaller and later the help of Don Juan de Austria in 1531 and 1572 respectively theVenetians tried to conquer Methoni but wthout success. Only one century later, in 7 July 1686 after a siege of c. one week the Venetians with Francisco Morosini were able to capture Methoni, but in 1715 the Ottomans again gained the control of the city and Morea /Peloponnese. The Venetians considered it an important port and called it "Venetiarum ocellae" (the eyes of Venice) .
