AEK Athens FC is the football club of the Athlitiki Enosis Konstantinoupoleos, or in English the Athletic Union of Constantinople (AEK). The sports club was founded in April of 1924 in Athens, Greece following the expulsion of the Greek population of Turkey in 1922 and was initially staffed by refugees of the expulsion. AEK presently plays at the OAKA Spyros Louis stadium in Maroussi, a suburb of Athens.

The emblem of AEK is a two-headed black eagle on golden background, one head looking east (to Constantinople or New Rome), the other looking west (to Rome). This symbol was initially used by the Byzantine Empire, and is still in use by the Greek Orthodox Church.

The football section of AEK is one of the leading football clubs in Greece, having won 27 national titles (11 Championships, 13 Cups, 2 Super Cups, 1 League Cup) with some good perfomances in European competitions. (UEFA Cup semifinalists in the 1976-77 season).

The basketball section of AEK is also one of the leading clubs in Greece and the first Greek club ever to win an international title in all sports as it won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1968.

AEK's stadium was Nikos Goumas. It was first opened in 1930. Between 1985 and 1987, the capacity reached as high as 36,766 spectators. A new stadium is yet to be planned. The latest capacity of the stadium was 24,729 (all seated).Nikos Goumas stadium was demolished in 2003.

Throughout its history, the club has produced many of Greece's footballing stars, including Kostas Nestoridis, Mimis Papaioannou, Thomas Mavros, and Stelios Manolas. Many of its players also helped Greece win Euro 2004: Demis Nikolaidis, Michalis Kapsis, Vasilis Lakis, Vasilis Tsiartas, Kostas Katsouranis, Theodoros Zagorakis and Traianos Della.

The club survived serious financial problems lately, to the point where its very existence was threatened.

Recently former AEK striker Demis Nikolaidis, took over presidency and with hard work and proper actions put the club in a road of solving all the financial problems. AEK now is a perfectly organized football club again, with ambitions of success and titles in Greece and even European competitions.

Coach Fernando Santos did amazing job last year, creating a very competitive team with young and unknown players. AEK lost the championship in the last 2 games and gave very good perfomances, especially against her main rivals, Olympiakos and Panathinaikos.

AEK now has 5 international players with European Champion Greece (Katsouranis, Lyberopoulos, Moras, Alexopoulos and Lakis).
