The beaches around the island consists of rough gravel. It is accessible with a moped or a boat. The ecosystem in the north side of the island are in good condition. The monachus seals Monachus-Monachus are common in the island and are protected. This seal is the rarest in Europe. In 1992, the Alonissos Marine Park was created to protect the monachus seals and other animals. Patitiri older forms: Patitirion (Greek, Modern: Πατητήρι, Katharevoussa: -on) is a town located in the southern part of the island of Alonissos and serves the capital of Alonissos in the Sporades. It is also called by this name while in the census records recognizes as a separate settlement. The population in 2001 was 1,697. Patitiri was destroyed in the 1965 earthquake.
