Aigaleo, commonly Aegaleo or Egaleo (Greek: Αιγάλεω) is a municipality west of Athens, Greece. it is situated west of the Cephissos river. Its population is around 120,000. One quarter of the municipality is industrialized mainly in the east where the Cephissus valley is located and is connected as the Athens Industrial Area. The first name of Egaleo was "Nees Kidonies". Aigaleo was named after the mountain Aigaleo (even if it is not in the municipality) which is derived from the words Aiga and Laos (Goat and People). The mountain was choosen by Xerxes to observe the battle of Salamis. Today its population is about 100000. The most of its citizens are workers. The soccer team for the city is Egaleo FC. Its city newspaper since 1985 has the same name with the suburban city called Aigaleo. It used to be the seat of Western Attica. The present mayor of the city is Dimitris Kalogeropoulos (New Democracy). The community will have a subway station named Aegaleo. About 1/4 of its area is full with factories. The biggest probles for the past few decades was smog and traffic congestion. Egaleo is also the name of the monthly newspaper of this city since 1985. The editor is George Kafetzis.
