Agios Stefanos (Greek: meaning Saint Stephen, Άγιος Στέφανος) is a rather exclusive suburb in Attica, Greece -- just about 23 km north of Athens. Agios Stefanos is almost purely residential, but there are a few shops within its main street. Agios Stefanos sits in the northern part of the Athenian plain and are between the Parnitha mountain and the mountain range to the east. Agios Stefanos is accessed with two interchanges with GR-1/E75 (Athens - Lamia - Thessaloniki) at the 21st and the 24th km with the GR-83 and 1.3 km south of the tolls. It is linked with a road linking to Anixi. The Cephissus River lies to the west. Agios Stefanos is located SE of Thiva, S of Euboea and Oropos, W of Marathon, NE of Kifissia and NE of the Attiki Odos (number 6).

History

In May 1924 70 families from the area of Constantinople (Agios Stefanos, Fanari, Nyfes, Avasso, Tsifout Bouzas..) and 36 families from other places of Minor Asia (Ikonio, Prokopi..) refugees after the Minor Asia catastrophe arrived in Kalamaria Thessaloniki. Some of these then arrived in the place of Agios Stefanos known as Oion in Deceleia in antiquity. They lived for some two year in tents until the first houses were build. Agios Stefanos was known in the past as "Neo Bougati", named after the Bougati or Palaio Bougati (Old Bougati) which is today known as Anoixi.

Until the 1960s and the 1970s, farmlands cover the area around Agios Stefanos which the remainder exists around the area. Forests covers part of the community. Most of the population are urban while until the 1960s and the 1970s were rural. Luxury houses arrived in Agios Stefanos in the 1970s and continued into the 1990s. Housing developments continues to this day.
